At the 2013 German Open Class Championships in Mengen, the various models of the EB28 and EB29 clearly demonstrated their superior performance.
Michael Sommer once again became German Champion in the Open Class flying the EB29, followed by Uli Schwenk in second place, also flying an EB29.
Third place went to Tassilo Bode with the racing two-seater EB29DElektro.
After holding fourth place for much of the competition, Patrick Gai flying the EB28 edition ultimately finished a strong seventh.
In total, 8 of the 28 participants chose to fly EB aircraft.
We congratulate all participants on their achievements.
The option to fly with different wingspans was not used in Mengen, as the weather conditions were often inconsistent. Consequently, the pilots flew with the 28.3 m wingspan on all competition days, still achieving very high average speeds and clearly dominating the field.
The competition debut of the EB29DElektro was also highly successful.
Firstly, the concept of the racing two-seater proved extremely effective — the pilots were able to compete on equal terms with the otherwise superior single-seaters.
Secondly, the electric propulsion system proved to be robust and reliable — powered returns over approximately 140 km and regular self-launches at maximum take‑off mass were always possible. Especially in high temperatures, the electric drive demonstrated noticeably better performance than conventional combustion engines.
